Affected by the recent heavy rainfall in the Minjiang-Tuojiang River Basin and Jialing River Basin, at 14:00 on September 20, the inflow of the Three Gorges Reservoir rose rapidly to 42,500 m3/s, marking its first major flood of 2025 to exceed the 40,000 m3/s threshold.
In response to this round of heavy rainfall, China Yangtze Power Co., Ltd. ("CYPC") paid close attention to the changes in weather conditions. Moreover, CYPC, in collaboration with the Hubei Meteorological Service, the Upper Changjiang River Bureau of Hydrological and Water Resources Survey and other relevant organizations, intensified its forecast and operation coordination by holding 10 joint internal and external consultation meetings. This effort enabled the successful prediction of the current flood process a week in advance. Subsequently, CYPC has been operating the reservoir in strict compliance with directives from the Changjiang Water Resources Commission. Since September 15, the average daily outflow of the Three Gorges Reservoir has gradually increased from 21,000 m3/s to about 26,000 m3/s, lowering the initial regulation water level of the reservoir to 162.63 m, and creating 1.17 billion m3?of additional flood control storage in advance. By doing so, the reservoir is fully leveraging its role as a flood regulator, ensuring the operational safety of the dam and the safety of flood discharge downstream.
At present, the Yangtze River Basin is in the autumn rainy season. Under the guidance and support of dispatching departments such as the Changjiang Water Resources Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources and the power grid companies, CYPC will uphold the bottom line of flood control safety. To be specific, it will conduct rolling consultations on upstream water and rainfall regimes, continue to enhance forecasting and prediction, and formulate science-based optimal scheduling plans. By actively fulfilling its role as the "main force" in flood control and management, CYPC is fully committed to building a safe and secure Yangtze River and safeguarding the lives and property of the people.
